We’re rounding off the month with one last adorable alumni story from Ramiro and his partner Marta! Read about how their connection took from York all the way to the German city of Heidelberg after graduating – where they’re embarking in careers as budding scientists.
“We were two Spanish international students that knew of each other but never got the chance to meet. Marta did her Erasmus in York from Spain in 2022 and I started my degree in York from Spain in 2021. I was an international student ambassador, and worked helping international students get to the correct bus when arriving at Manchester airport. That is when we first met.
Then after, we had friends in common from the Biology department and ultimately I asked her to be my girlfriend at the Horserace track, after having a wonderful day at the races.
After her Erasmus came to an end, she went back to Spain and we continued our relationship over distance, being able to see each other when both of us were in Spain, and also when we were able to visit each other.”

Meanwhile, Ramiro completed a summer placement in Biology supported by GenerationResearch, the University’s charitable fund providing paid research experience to the next generation of scientists.
“Until this year, two years of long distance after, we are again living in the same city, in Heidelberg (Germany). I am doing my Masters in molecular biosciences, and she came to Heidelberg as an Erasmus+ student to work in a cancer research lab.
Coincidentally, we now both work in the same institute, the DKFZ (German Cancer Research Centre), one of the best cancer research institutes in the world.”
We’re wishing Ramiro and Marta the best for the future! If you’d like to read more alumni love stories, you can do here.
