A York Alumni love story: Marina & Ryan

Each academic year brings fresh faces, new opportunities, and the excitement of Freshers’ Week. For Marina and Ryan, those first introductions on campus were the start of a lifelong connection.

“We both studied mathematics at York and were both in the same college, Constantine. We first met in freshers week along with a group of others that all studied the same subject and were all in the same college. As Constantine was the furthest college away at the time we had to get the bus into town and we met on the way to the club in the bus journey there.

“We officially got together after Christmas of our first year of university – not long after exams as we had spent a lot of time revising together – we’ve been together ever since. Our very first date was to Nando’s, which is still one of our favourite places to eat. There we bonded over both having Dalmatians as our family dogs – we now have our own Dalmatian!

“We ended up going through our university journey together as we had a lot of the same modules and lectures. We graduated together and were lucky enough to be sat together during our graduation ceremony as our names ended up next to each other.

“Since finishing university we have bought a house, we’ve got married, and we’ve had two children – the second arrived earlier this summer.”

  1. An article about my wife, an alumnus from 1972, then Jane Morgan, now Jane Clarke, recently appeared in Nature, a prestigious scientific journal, entitled “Tales of teaching and teamwork”. You may wish to read it given her prominent position in the academic world.

We met at York University, got married in 1973, and celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary this year. Sadly, my Langwith no longer exists!
