10 things every recent York grad will remember, forever

Ducks, Roses, and graduating in a spaceship. It’s graduation season again and in the spirit of the season, we’ve compiled 10 things we think York graduates will remember forever.

So, if you’re feeling nostalgic about nights out in Flares singing ABBA,  or late night study sessions in Morrell library, read on.

1. Long Boi. Not just a duck, but an icon. Where else would you celebrate the life of a dead duck with a funeral hosted by Greg James and a choir singing ‘Hot to Go’ (Long Boi’s version.)

2. On that note: Campus Geese. Whether you spent your entire time dodging them or feeding bird seed from Nisa, it’s no doubt that the screeching ‘HONK’ will be permanently etched into your brain

3. Graduating in a spaceship. Okay, we know it’s not exactly the Minster but how many of your friends from back home can say that they graduated in a UFO?

4. Blue sh*ts. Sickly sweet and a shade of fluorescence that cannot be good for you. We’ll still order them every time, though.

5. Roses. Are white of course! (we can keep chanting this until it’s true: this year doesn’t count).

6. Concrete Campus. You tried telling your friends from home that it’s ‘brutalism’ and that they just wouldn’t get it. Oh well. Pictures of Derwent DO look really cool in black and white.

7. JB Morrell Library. Who doesn’t already miss this absolute beauty of a multi story building? Late night study sessions to try and save your academic reputation just don’t hit the same anywhere else.

8. Flares. The only place in York where you can listen to ABBA, Britney, S Club, all on circa 2000s light up dancefloor. (If Salvos is your favourite, what are you doing?!)

9. The ongoing search for the best takeaway. Unfortunately, Salt and Pepper and Dominic’s Pizza doesn’t count if your only experience of it is at 2am after a night out. A portion of chips, cheese and gravy from any of the kebab vans is delightful, however.

10. The U1 bus. Decked out in diva pink, it’s the place where gossip is exchanged, post-lecture debriefs are held and of course, the tumultuous journey into town for drinks.

Bonus points if you’ll forever remember it as the 66 and 67 (rest in peace).
